British Championship 2015 Day 5

 Fourteen players within a half-point of the leading has been whittled down to six after yesterday's fifth round. The four GMs leading on 4½/5 - Howell, Hawkins, Gormally and Emms - meet today, which means that the decisive pairings might well happen whilst I'm in Warwick, from Monday to Wednesday. (Hopefully I have an internet connection!)

 Yesterday's puzzle was a position from Villiers-Grieve in which black has just grabbed a hot pawn:

 We were spoilt for good games just on the commentary boards, with the positional crush in Emms-Arkell a nice counterbalance to the more brutal Hawkins-Flear game. But after my recent comments, what could I choose but Rice-Chevannes? Black wins an Exchange Caro-Kann in just 16 moves!

 There were plenty of interesting tactics too. There was a nice combinational finish to Scott-Rudd, whilst at the other end of the spectrum, Kalaiyalahan-Storey saw an FM leave a Rook en prise. Instead, we're going to look at Burrows-Golding.
